I am an English artist, designer and engineer whose greatest artistic inspirations come from JMW Turner, (in particular his many sketchbooks within which he demonstrates his mastery of observation, composition and tonal control), John Singer Sargent, (with his sometimes loose brushwork and his mastery of portraiture, but stunning pencilwork too, and of course his scenes of idyllic, romantic English summers). Finally there is the Master of Light, Joaquín Sorolla, an undisputed titan whose ability to describe how the hot Spanish sunlight plays over and through loose flowing clothing, and the intimacy of moments he creates on canvas bring back my own memories of growing up in Spain.
I was born in Mexico in 1971 to English and American parents. After an art foundation course and degree I began my working life as a scenic sculptor, model maker and VFX technician on television shows, commercials and pop promos, working with the likes of Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, The Spice Girls, The BeeGees, ACDC and many more before re-training and becoming an art teacher for 23 years. Dom finished his career as head of art at the prestigious St.Swithun’s School in Winchester. He has run two businesses during his teaching as well, returning to his modelmaking roots and working amongst other things on two Hollywood blockbusters, Dunkirk (2017) and First Man (2018). He has travelled widely now lives in Wiltshire.
